Is It Too Early To Talk About the 2025 Patriots?

Although the New England Patriots 2024-25 season begins Sunday on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals, is it too early to talk about next season?

According to BetMGM, the Patriots have a wins total line of 4.5 this season. The lowest number in the league, which if everything goes to how Vegas believes, would give the Patriots the number one draft pick. This would be their sixth number one overall draft pick in the team’s history, and the first since the team selected Drew Bledsoe in 1994.

It feels like a given that that selection will not be a quarterback. So what will the decision be?

The 2025 NFL Draft

The Patriots have two primary positions of need in this draft, offensive tackle and wide receiver.

The top two names Patriots fans should look into: Will Campbell, OT from LSU, and Travis Hunter, WR/CB from Colorado. In Bleacher Report’s latest mock draft, they have both going in the top three, with the Patriots selecting Campbell at the third overall pick.

Will Campbell, OT

One of the Patriots biggest concern’s with starting rookie quarterback Drake Maye: the offensive line.

The Patriots struggled to improve the line this season, losing left tackle Trent Brown and replacing him with Chukwuma Okorafor. Campbell is a left tackle, which makes him perfect for New England. It will take time for the LSU start to adjust to the league, but it would give Drake Maye an elite blindside blocker for the foreseeable future.

Travis Hunter, WR/CB

Travis Hunter is the best player in college football.

Last week, he played 129 out of the 131 total snaps from Colorado’s first game against North Dakota State. He came out with seven catches for 132 yards and three touchdowns, while adding three tackles. Hunter has not yet decided on what position he will choose for the NFL, but most scouts assume he will decide to play wide receiver. The Patriots selected two receivers in the 2024 draft: Ja’lynn Polk and Javon Baker.

In an ideal world, both receivers break out. This is an unlikely scenario, however, and even so Travis Hunter is leagues above the two.

What Will the Team do?

The solution for this problem depends on how the Patriots season goes, of course.

If the offensive line holds up and plays well, the Patriots should have no issue with giving Drake Maye his franchise receiver, and selecting an offensive tackle in the second round. If the line fails, then the Patriots should reward Maye with his blindside blocker for the foreseeable future.
