Chicago Bulls Stock Watch: Who’s Up & Who’s Down

Alright, Bulls aficionados, let’s dive into the wild ride that is the 2024-25 season.

Picture this: a team in flux, trying to blend the exuberance of youth with the wisdom of seasoned vets. The Bulls have been a mixed bag, showcasing moments of brilliance and stretches of head-scratching inconsistency.

They have leaned heavily on a fast-paced, transition-heavy offense spearheaded by their dynamic backcourt. Defensively, they’ve been a work in progress, with moments of lockdown intensity interspersed with lapses of indifference that leave fans groaning.

As the season progresses, the Bulls face a dilemma: Should they double down on their current roster and push for a playoff spot or pivot towards a more youth-centric rebuild?

Stock Watch: Bulls Players

 Stock Up

Josh Giddey

Despite what some Bulls fans might believe, Josh Giddey has been a revelation, bringing a blend of playmaking and versatility that has energized the Bulls’ backcourt.

His court vision has allowed the Bulls to find an offensive identity that extends past just hoisting threes in bunches. They’re making them at a very high rate, and a big part of that is Giddey’s ability to make passes on time and in rhythm. He’s also averaging 12.8 points, 7.8 assists, 7.6 rebounds and 1.6 steals while shooting 49% per game.

Ayo Dosunmu

After a slow start, Ayo Dosunmu has found his groove.

Since being inserted into the starting lineup, Dosunmu has proven quite productive. Over the past six games, he has averaged 16.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 57%. His defensive tenacity and improved shooting have made him a key contributor. Dosunmu’s hustle and heart have endeared him to the Chicago faithful, and his stock is rising.

 Stock Down

Patrick Williams

The thought was that Patrick Williams’ new contract would give him the confidence to live up to his draft pedigree.

But Williams has done very little when given opportunities. In 17 games thus far, he has averaged 9.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, shooting just 36% from the field.

He has been a disappointment. His stock continues to take a hit due to his ongoing injury issues. His absence has blown the Bulls’ defensive schemes and overall depth. But the rise of Matas Buzelis is quickly making fans forget about Williams’ importance to the Bulls’ success.

Coby White

Coby White’s season has been marred by a left ankle sprain, which has limited his impact. While he’s shown flashes of brilliance, consistency remains an issue. White’s points per game have taken a slight dip since last year, and he is shooting closer to his career average of 42%. Questions remain about whether White is a key part of the Bulls’ future.

White will soon seek the hefty price tag, and the CBA restrictions will only create more questions.

 Neutral/Watch List

Nikola Vucevic

To say Nikola Vucevic has been consistent would be an understatement. He is having one of the best seasons in his 14-year career. Vucevic’s steady presence is vital, either as a trade piece or as a needed option should the Bulls push for a playoff spot.

Matas Buzelis

Matas Buzelis has flashed defensive potential as a rookie, but it’s still early to make a definitive call on his stock. His development will be something to watch as the season progresses. Buzelis is a raw talent and is quickly adapting his skills to the speed of the NBA game.

Zach LaVine

Zach LaVine’s season has been a mixed bag. While his scoring ability remains elite, questions about his fit within the team’s long-term plans linger. His defensive improvements are noteworthy, but his future with the Bulls is still uncertain. LaVine’s talent is undeniable, but whether he’s the right piece for the Bulls’ puzzle is still up in the air.

As we move deeper into the season, the Bulls’ path will hinge on their ability to stay healthy and find a cohesive identity. Will they push for the playoffs, or will they embrace a rebuild and develop their young talent?

One thing’s certain— it’s never dull in Chicago.
