Aaron Glenn Gives Jets Best Chance to Succeed

First-time head coach Aaron Glenn doesn’t fit the typical mold many NFL teams seek.

The NFL is undoubtedly an offensive league, and the brightest minds on that side of the ball tend to get the nod. However, this hire gives the New York Jets organization legitimate hope. Things haven’t looked good recently, and big question marks are in the air.

But after firing Robert Saleh and seeing how the rest of the season unceremoniously ended, bringing the former 12th-overall pick back to the Meadowlands is exactly what this franchise needs right now.

Shoring Up The AFC East

Many football fans may look at this AFC East side with a consistent smirk.

And rightfully so. Many highlight this team for its drama more than anything else. Also, a significant Aaron Rodgers decision looms. This homecoming actually stands a chance. Most of all, this locker room needs a strong, central voice and presence.

With all of the talent, it rarely looks like a serious or competitive team, particularly against the stronger sides. However, many of those issues should disappear if a galvanizing leader — such as the former Lions defensive coordinator — is brought in.

The building has been without leadership for far too long. Reintroducing someone who has earned this opportunity and was beloved here before increases the likelihood that much of the pettiness will disappear. Granted, many of the same people who have been involved in the farce remain.

Furthermore, Woody Johnson is still ultimately in charge. However, if the ship looks like it’s starting to get back on track, it’s doubtful that he would feel the need or even want to meddle too much if it’s working with Aaron Glenn.

NFL owners hate losing. But embarrassment is unacceptable. Regardless, his ability to take hold of the situation early and show that this NY side is on the right track would allow Johnson to feel comfortable enough not to need to be hands-on or express regret, both in words and actions, over his latest hire.

How Aaron Glenn Avoids Past Pitfalls

The pieces, particularly on defense, are there. And that unit has looked good enough to be on a potential playoff team within recent memory.

The aforementioned void will prove to be the biggest and most immediate challenge. Rodgers had varying control depending on who you ask. But that’s less of a factor if the head coach is willing to tell the star QB no when the team needs it. Aaron Glenn needs to draw a clearly defined line early.

And if another saga appears to be on the cusp of starting over again, the future Hall of Famer would need to immediately see the exit sign. Either way, the same approach is necessary, regardless of who plays behind center. Luckily for the Jets fans, Aaron Glenn has proven to be able to make adjustments while being a true leader of men among professional athletes.

Postseason play may be a stretch until we see how the roster pans out. But relative success and a better overall feel to the season would be a step in the right direction. And that is something few people could do under these circumstances. But he is uniquely positioned to be able to pull this off.
