Commanders Could Bring Back Their Classic Jerseys

In 2022, the Washington Commanders unveiled their new name and jerseys, and the response was, at best, mixed.

While opinions on the name of the team itself are more divided among fans, with some wanting to return to the previous name and others simply unimpressed with the name Commanders, there’s one area where most supporters agree: the new jerseys have not lived up to expectations. At best, the current uniforms are a worse version of the classic burgundy and gold that fans are accustomed to.

Earlier this week, D.C. podcast host Kevin Sheehan went on his radio program, suggesting that the Commanders could be bringing back a version of their classic jerseys for games the NFL allows teams to wear an alternate uniform. According to Sheehan, this potential throwback jersey would have the traditional burgundy and gold that fans grew up wearing, this time with “Commanders” stitched below the collar.

“I have it on good authority that they are going to go back to something resembling the old uniforms,” said Sheehan. “In these alt opportunities this year, I would imagine that at least in a couple of them we’re going to have a uniform that looks like the old uniform.”

Sheehan went on to state that he is unsure what will be on the helmet, but guesses they will stick with the current helmets.

The Commanders have not officially announced this, but if this rumor is true, that would be an absolute home run for the franchise. The current uniforms were one of Dan Snyder’s final blunders with the franchise, and bringing back the old jerseys, even just for a few games, could easily energize the fan base.

Could this mean the return of the old name?

No, and fans should let go of that expectation. The NFL has made it crystal clear that the previous name is not returning as the league does not want to bring back the public relations nightmare that overshadowed the franchise for decades.

Instead, if this rumor were to be true, fans should see it as a celebration of the team’s history under a fresh start with new ownership. It is an opportunity to honor the legacy of the franchise on the field while moving forward with a new era of Commanders football.
