Rockets Working on Multi-Team Deal to Acquire Carmelo Anthony

Banana Boat Brothers unite? It looks like two of the four members may be joining forces. The Knicks and Rockets have been working on a multi-team trade that would send Carmelo Anthony to Houston, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN announced via Twitter.

Anthony has a no-trade clause and a trade kicker in his contract, but the Knicks superstar is willing to join the Rockets and try to topple the Warriors out west.

The talks started with just the Knicks and the Rockets, but has expanded to more teams, likely because the Rockets don’t have what the Knicks want. After giving up an arm and a leg to acquire Chris Paul, the Rockets don’t have many assets left to acquire Anthony.

Any trade to acquire Melo would more than likely move Ryan Anderson, Eric Gordon, or Trevor Ariza, as Melo has a salary of $26.4 million. Anthony averaged 22.4 PPG and 5.9 RPG last season while making his 12th All-Star Game.

The Rockets have gone all-in in their pursuit to take down the Warriors, giving up promising assets to acquire star players at the edges of their prime. If this backfires, the Rockets will have no solid players in the present or any future assets that they can build around. Win-now has a whole new meaning in Houston.
