The Days of Elite Patriots Defense Have Finally Crumbled

The Patriots haven’t been sound on offense since Tom Brady left New England at the turn of the decade.

But the defense was an aspect of the game the team could rely on until now.

The defense has drastically regressed from last year despite little player personnel changes and a similar overall record.

For reference, the 2023 Patriots finished the season ranked seventh in total defense, while this year, with one game left in the season, they rank 23rd.

For almost 25 years, the New England region has had the privilege of witnessing elite defensive play. What changed?

Bill Belichick.

Eras Change Everything

The eight-time Super Bowl champion left the organization after a disappointing 4-13 campaign in 2023. But with his departure followed his son, Stephen Belichick. The father-and-son duo controlled the defensive side of the ball in New England for 11 years.

It is fair to point out that current Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo served as an inside linebackers coach for the team for four years. However, Mayo never called plays for the team, and after Stephen Belichick departed with his father, Mayo needed a new defensive coordinator.

Defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington received a promotion to coordinator duties, and it’s safe to say his scheme is not working. The team has allowed over 2,100 rushing yards this season, putting them near the bottom of the league (25th).

The Patriots’ defensive injuries have most certainly contributed to the team’s struggles. Key impact players like Ja’Whaun Bentley, Christian Barmore and Marcus Jones have missed extended periods this year.

Sure, injuries play a factor, but the coaching has to be questioned at some point. Covington deserves some blame for the Patriots’ defensive woes, as the team has done less with more this year.

Defensive breakdowns have been a regular theme this season, illustrated perfectly by this 40-yard walk-in by Ladd McConkey in Week 17.

This is the worst the defensive side of the ball has looked in New England since the Patriots wore royal blue uniforms and Drew Bledsoe was playing quarterback.

If New England wants to start winning again, they must tweak their offense and confront their crumbling defense.
